South Parade Now MG Road Bangalore, 1900s Postcard

A 1910 postcard of South Parade now M G Road during the British Era in Bangalore (Bengaluru). The building shown was the Prince of Wales building situated on South Parade Road. It was named in honour of the Prince and Princess of Wales, later King George V and Queen Mary after they visited Bangalore in 1906.

Reviewing the signboards closely, some vaguely read as Dental Surgery, C Baggala & Co, J B Forster, etc. M G Road is undoubtedly one of the best landmarks of Bangalore. Formerly known as South Parade during the British era days. The street was a shopper’s paradise, many shops, departmental stores, movie theaters, cafes and restaurants, bookshops, etc, lined the street.

Harmonized by shady trees along the way. South Parade, was evidently a fashionable and a favourite go-to place for the Europeans at the time. M G Road continues to house several of the old names today. From the Deccan Herald newspaper office to a renovated cinema hall, now called Shankar Nag Chitramandir. Not to forget Koshy’s one of the oldest restaurants in Bangalore, which is slightly off M G Road. However, glass facade buildings are fast sprouting on this famous landmark route. Did you know – the name apparently referred to the location of the street which was south of the military parade ground
