British Era Bangalore’s Opera House And Hollywood City, 2 Photos 1943

Opera House & Hollywood City Bangalore - 2 Photos 1940

Two photographs from 1943 of Bangalore’s Opera House and Hollywood City. Offering a rare glimpse of urban and cultural life during the British colonial period. Despite the city’s rapid modernisation, fragments of its historic past still survive, like the Opera House at the junction of Brigade Road and Residency Road. Although now an unrecognizable modern structure from what it once was.

The Opera House is believed to have been constructed during the early decades of the 20th century. Although built under British administration, the exact year of its construction remains undocumented. In its earliest years, when cinema was still in its infancy in Bangalore. The venue is thought to have hosted operas, theatrical productions, and live performances that catered to the city’s European and elite Indian audiences.

As motion pictures gained immense popularity, the Opera House was later converted into a cinema theatre. One of the photographs shows a poster displayed near the entrance advertising Paris After Dark, a 1943 American war drama film.

The second photograph features a place known as “Hollywood City” in Bangalore. While detailed historical records about this location are scarce, it is believed to have been a themed amusement park or entertainment space during the British era.

Together, these images serve as valuable visual records of Bangalore’s evolving leisure spaces, highlighting how colonial architecture, early cinema, and imported cultural influences shaped the city’s urban identity in the first half of the 20th century.

Did you know – the once-traditional Opera House, has today given way to a modern structure now known as the Samsung Opera House.
