BRV Talkies Movie Theater Bangalore, 1920 Postcard

BRV Talkies Movie Theater Bangalore, 1920 Postcard

An old 1920 photo postcard of BRV Talkies Movie Theater in Bangalore, now Bengaluru. Initially named IDF Hall and Warwick Majors Electric Theatre. Later known as BRV Theatre or Bangalore Rifle Volunteers Theatre. Situated on Cubbon Road this is an over 100 years old establishment.

Constructed in the medieval Tudor style architecture. It housed regimental offices, an armory, stores, etc, in its early days. Including recreational spaces like a theatre, reading room, billiards room, and bar. The Bangalore Rifle Volunteers’ (BRV) roots go back to the 1880s. After the four Anglo-Mysore Wars Bangalore became a Military Cantonment.

The BRV unit was created as part of the Madras Army in 1884. The unit would later merge with Coorg and Mysore Rifles to form the 6th Bangalore, Coorg, and Mysore Battalion. The BRV establishment was built for them. Since there are some obscurities not sure how it got the name “IDF Hall and Warwick Majors Electric Theatre” as shown in this postcard. Did you know – in the late 1970s, the army decided to shut the theatre and turn it into the Golden Palm Army Canteen (CSD canteen), which exists to date.
