The author states that Chennai was the first British colony in India. A brief extract- “Into comparatively short period of three hundred years the city has crowded an important and varied history. It was a power in the land before Bombay was transferred to England as a Queen’s dower, Calcutta founded, or Karachi thought of. By virtue of these facts, Madras is senior of the three great Presidencies, and here Governor ranks second to the Viceroy…”
The three other great Presidencies referred to are Calcutta, Bombay, and Karachi. See my posts- Antique Photo Madras Fort St George 1872 Very Rare., and Antique Map San Thome Fort Madras. This vintage book – is a little brittle through age and possibly cheaper paper quality especially the covers.
