Europeans And Horse Carriage At Lalbagh Bangalore, 1898 Photo
An interesting 1898 photo of a procession of horse carriages and Europeans at Lalbagh in Bangalore (Bengaluru). An unusual sight of European crowd gathered at Bangalore’s Lalbagh in tandem and regular horse carriages. The crowd includes men and women all seated on their horse carriages.
Quite interestingly the carriages consist of tandems of six-horses, four-horses, and two-horses. A rare sight in Bangalore or for that matter anywhere in British India. Indian attendants and bystanders are also seen. A handwritten note on the bottom reads “Tandem Meet in the Lal Bagh, Bangalore, March 1898.”
All are gathered perhaps for a long trip which was sometimes a regular feature of the Britishers during colonial rule. Lalbagh is a colonial-era government botanical garden from 1856. It was first commissioned by Haider Ali once the absolute ruler of Mysore in 1760. His son Tipu Sultan completed the garden during his time of rule. After Tipu Sultan’s defeat in the Anglo-Mysore War of 1799, Tipu’s possessions fell into the hands of the British. One of them was the Lalbagh Garden. Its most prominent landmark is the Glass House, which was completed in 1889. It was modeled on the lines of London’s Crystal Palace. Click on photo to get better view
