A 1928 photo of a British regimental parade at Bangalore Cantonment. A British military regimental parade seems to be in progress at the Parade Ground. In attendance is a large crowd shown watching the military ceremony at Bangalore (Bengaluru) Cantonment. Note the Union Jack flag flying from a flagpole.

After the British defeated Hyder Ali and Tipu Sultan and seized the Bangalore Fort during the Anglo-Mysore Wars. They stayed back and made Bangalore an important military base. A cantonment for its military presence including civil service officers was established. Cantonments were a self-contained city in a city, with markets, shops, restaurants, bars, religious places of worship, and so on.
