Military Brigade Parade British Era Bangalore, 1918 Postcard

A rare 1918 postcard of the Military Brigade parade during the British era in Bangalore’s parade ground. Bangalore (Bengaluru) was a cluster of villages in the 18th century, its destiny changed after the defeat of Tipu Sultan in the Anglo-Mysore Wars at Seringapattnam. The British forces breached the impregnable Tipu’s Fort in Bangalore in 1791.

Thereby the Europeans stayed on with a garrison in Bangalore because of its cool weather and strategic location. By 1831, Bangalore steadily became an important military base. A cantonment was formed, it is essentially a city in a city. By 1902 Lord Kitchener the Commander-In-Chief, India, carried out a series of reforms unifying the various splinter groups of smaller chieftain armies into greater unifying army brigades. As a result, one of the formations was the Bangalore Brigade.
