Watering of South Parade Road British Era Bangalore, 1907 Postcard
A 1907 photo postcard shows the watering of Parade Road (M G Road) during British Era Bangalore (Bengaluru). Interestingly the watering is with the help of a water tanker-laden bullock cart. Motorized vehicles were not too common at the time. The scene is in the South Parade Road (MG Road) during the British Era in Bangalore.
The Road was one of the best-known landmarks of the city. Apart from being a shopper’s paradise, the movie halls, cafes and promenades made it a very fashionable address. The Bangalore Cantonment is close by. Bangalore like Madras once had wide streets during the British era days, but no more because of the rapid growth of the city.
Situated on the Deccan Plateau, the city has the most pleasant climate almost all year round. Many Europeans frequented the place for its cool climate. It was at one time nicknamed the Garden City of India and probably still is. Also shown in this old postcard of Bangalore’s South Parade Road watering are rows of white gated compounds. The beautiful gated entrances shown were probably to the grand bungalows that were found in M G Road at one time, these have given way to commercial buildings later.
