Colaba Point Lighthouse Bombay, 1868 Print
A newspaper engraving of the Colaba Point Lighthouse in Bombay (now Mumbai). It is a clipping from The Illustrated London News of 1868. Interestingly there is no trace of this Colaba Point Lighthouse today. There are ambiguous reports about its existence. Alexander Findlay, a lighthouse expert, in 1868, had specified that this Colaba Point Lighthouse was built in 1847.
Another source had said that it was discontinued in 1874, and in its place, the Prongs Reef Lighthouse had been built. Yet another source reveals that it was still standing till 1906. However, whatever the outcome, we will not know exactly what happened to it. This old print of 1868 is perhaps one of the few illustrations available today of the lighthouse before its oblivion.

Did you know- that lighthouses were first lit with fire, progressing through the ages with candles, oil lamps, and finally the electric lamp.
