Bangalore In 1791 During The 3rd Anglo-Mysore War, 1903 Map
Lord Cornwallis had prepared the map to attack Bangalore in 1791. At that period, Bangalore comprised of today’s Avenue road, Chikpet, and surrounding areas only (the area was also popularly called Petta by the British, and Pete, “pay-tay” by the locals). The town was encircled by thick green hedges (bushes) with an impregnable fort at its south, see map.
Lord Cornwallis attacked and captured the Bangalore Fort and town as planned. After breaching the impregnable fort and capturing Bangalore, it was made a strategic location for the British. The next in line was to attack and capture Seringapatam, Tipu Sultan’s strong citadel. The British forces, commanded by Cornwallis, soundly defeated Mysore, despite Tipu’s stiff resistance. It was during the 3rd Anglo-Mysore War which lasted 3 years (1790-1792).
Did you know – while attacking Seringapatam the British faced a flurry of rockets by Tipu. Tipu’s experimenting with rocket science is now considered to be the father of rocket science.
