Parade At Mysore Palace, 1900 Postcard
An old 1900 postcard of the Parade at Mysore Palace. This is a military parade honoring the Maharajah of Mysore. Shown is a huge parade by soldiers on horseback and foot in the courtyard of the palace. The palace’s dome is faintly visible in the mist. Traditionally ruled by the Wodeyars the Kingdom of Mysore is believed to have been founded in 1399.
By the 17th century, it was under the rule of Narasaraja Wodeyar I and Devaraja Wodeyar. The kingdom under the Wodeyars annexed large parts which now consist of Southern Karnataka and parts of Tamil Nadu. It became a powerful Kingdom in the whole of the Southern Deccan. Except for a brief period, when Hyder Ali made himself ruler of Mysore. He was part of the Mysorean army, Hyder Ali rose from the ranks to become a General in the Kingdom’s army.
He overthrew the Wodeyars and proclaimed himself the Sultan (ruler) then reigned from 1761 to 1782. His son Tipu Sultan succeeded him to rule from 1782 to 1799. Tipu Sultan was killed in the 4th Anglo-Mysore war in 1799. Thus ending a Sultanate by the British that dominated from 1761 to 1799. By installing Krishnaraja Wodeyar III. The British reinstalled the Wodeyar dynasty back to the Mysore throne. This was the brief era of Hyder Ali and Tipu Sultan in Mysore. Click on the photo for better view.
