Ramparts of Tipu Sultan’s Fort Bangalore, 1900 Postcard
A 1900 postcard shows the rampart of Tipu Sultan’s Fort in Bangalore (Bengaluru). It was originally constructed as a mud fort by Kempe Gowda I in 1537. Kempe Gowda I, the founder of Bangalore was a chieftain under the Vijayanagara Empire. The Empire ruled most parts of Karnataka in the 16th century.
Hyder Ali in one of his conquests captured the fortification in 1761. Eventually strengthening it with granite stones. Hyder Ali’s son Tipu Sultan further strengthened and enlarged the fort to an impregnable level. He had also completed the work of the half-finished summer palace inside the fortress that was originally built by Hyder Ali.
However, the British managed to breach the impregnable fort during the Anglo-Mysore Wars in 1791. They went on to capture it after great resistance, with both sides losing many of their soldiers in the process. Today only a fraction of the fortification remains. Although the palace still remains in its grandeur and is of great tourist attraction today. The postcard shows the ramparts of the Bangalore fort. Click on the image for better view.
