St Joseph’s College Bangalore – Old Postcard 1900

This is an old 1900 postcard of St Joseph’s College in Bangalore or Bengaluru. The first college that was opened in Bangalore was this St Joseph’s College.  Founded by the Fathers of the French Foreign Mission. Located in the heart of Bengaluru city. The area where the college now stands was once wooded with lush trees.

An educational institution coming up in a wooded area that was far from human habitation was a bit amusing to the people. In the British era, it catered to the many Europeans and a few sprinkling of upper-class Indians. Starting with a single building and few students, today with several buildings on its campus it has a student strength of 5000.
