Europeans Exploring The Backwaters of Kerala, 1895 Photo
An 1895 photo of two Europeans exploring the famous backwaters of Kerala from Trivandrum to Trichur (Thrissur). The inscription reads “Start of backwaters from Trivandrum – 20 miles south of Trichur Mar 1898.” This seems a waterway exploration trip. Two Britishers appear to be exploring the waterway from Trivandrum to Trichur in the late 19th century.
They have reached some place 20 miles south of Trichur. And are seen on the boat jetty with the locals. Not sure of the place but probably Kochi or Kodungalloor. A modern boat along with country boats can be seen on the water. Their luggage can be seen lying on the jetty, perhaps it was time for them to call it a day.
And to continue their journey the next day. Kerala is uniquely blessed with backwaters, lakes, and canals that crisscross the state. Another of its unique features is that on one side is the Western Ghats and on the other the Arabian Sea. A waterway connecting Trivandrum (Thiruvananthapuram) in the south to Kasargod in the north (600 km) is now being developed.

Did you know – that the geography of Kerala is unique, with the Arabian Sea on one side and the Western Ghat mountain range running parallel on the other side.
