Anglo-Mysore War, Last Effort And Fall of Tipu Sultan, 1877 Print

An 1877 engraving of Tipu Sultan’s last effort during the 4th Anglo-Mysore War in 1799. The print was engraved by Walker based on the artwork of R A Henry Singelton. This 1877 print was published by James S. Virtue of London. Hyder Ali died in 1782 and was succeeded by his son Tipu Sultan.

Tipu Sultan soon engaged in an aggressive war against the British. The venture proved costly, for in 1786 he was glad to secure peace at the cost of half his kingdom and 3½ million pounds. There already had been three Anglo-Mysore Wars the first starting in 1767 when Hyder Ali was still alive.

Despite negotiating treaties with the British, Tipu tried to ally with the French. This angered the British which led to the fourth Anglo-Mysore War (1798 to 1799). Although the Mysoreans fought a fierce battle, it was the end of their leader Tipu Sultan who faced death at the hands of the British. This is seen in this print which shows his last effort and fall.
