Grand Hotel & Cars In Calcutta, Old Photo 1927

This is an old 1927 photo that shows the Grand Hotel and motor cars in Calcutta, now Kolkata. Beautiful old vintage cars like today’s times run on Chowringhee Road. Chowringhee Road was one of the first roads and is believed to have existed even before the city of Calcutta was created. In the British era, it was the go-to place for hangouts of Britishers for its shops, restaurants, hotels, theaters, etc.

On the right side was the famous Italian restaurant Firpo’s, and the next building is the Grand Hotel. Further down the road, the high domed building is of the Whiteway, Laidlaw & Co. Almost all the shopping for the Europeans took place in this Whiteway, Laidlaw & Co departmental store. Equally interesting is the cluster of motorcars on the road. See the lineup of cars in the middle of the road opposite the Grand Hotel, these were apparently taxis. Click on the photo for better view.

Did you know- Chowringhee or Cherangi was one of the clusters of villages from which the city of Kolkata grew in British times.
