Domestic Life In British India, Photo 1890
A rare glimpse of domestic life during the British India era is shown in this 1890 photo. A British officer is getting a haircut from a turbaned Indian barber. Also shown is his pet dog who seems to be keeping an eye on things.
What better life would a Britisher get other than in India, servants would be at their beck and call. Although the presence of Britishers in India was minuscule when in comparison to the vast population of native Indians. Indians were a majority in the military, civil services, medical, and so on.
But the critical and top-ranking posts were always reserved for the Britisher, Indians always had to do with subordinate roles. Delhi, Calcutta, Bombay, and Madras were the main centers of British personnel concentration. In short, the average Britisher led a lavish lifestyle in India, and his takeback after retirement was a fortune. Click on the photo for better view.
