A rare 1791 newspaper that gives a report on the 3rd Anglo-Mysore War. The war that was fought against Tipu Sultan by the British Indian forces. The news is by way of letters sent by Lord Cornwallis, G F Cherry, and authorities of the Fort St George council in Madras (Chennai). The contents are of the East India House; The Storming of Bangalore; and The Letters from the East Indies too.

Most of the reports are long-winded and some read – “Tippoo Sultan with every art in his power, attempted to provoke him to an engagement…”  Another letter mentions “Our last communication respecting the Grand Army advised your honourable court, that Lord Cornwallis had advanced as far as Vellore, and that he hoped to reach Bangalore on the 5th or 6th of March…”

Another of the lines: Cornwallis had received information of the actual march of Rajah Tauje Want (Nizam’s General) with a considerable body of cavalry, towards him…” The letters generally give detailed accounts of the breaching and capture of the Bangalore FortTippoo (Tipu Sultan) and his army’s position near Gingee. An interesting letter addressed to Tippoo Sultan was written by one G. F. Cherry, P.L of Fort St George, Madras. A four-part close-up image of one of the news reports can be seen in this post. This antique newspaper is from the “The Mail; or, Claypoole’s Daily Advertiser,” dating to October 20, 1791. Click on the image to enlarge the view.
