Aerial View of Colaba, Oval Maidan & Back Bay Bombay, 1890 Photo
An old 1890 aerial view photo of Colaba, Oval Maidan, and Back Bay in Bombay (Mumbai). Another spectacular view of Bombay, probably taken by Raja Deen Dayal. The view is from the Secretariat building of which a portion can be seen here. The Secretariat building is on the same row of public buildings as the Rajabai Clock Tower and the Bombay High Court.
This row of public buildings faces the Oval Maidan and the Back Bay. The Esplanade and Bandstand are seen south of the Oval Maidan. The whole area where the tents are pitched is the Esplanade which also includes the Oval Maidan. Colaba and Fort area can be seen further down south. Warehouses and tall chimneys of cotton mills are also seen. The road between the public buildings and the Oval Maidan is officially known as Karamveer Bhaurao Marg. The road between the Back Bay and the Oval Maidan is the Queens Road.
Did you know – this view was before the Back Back reclamation that took place around the 1920s. The Marine and promenade came up only after the reclamation.
