rajabai clock tower bombay

An 1890 photocrom color photo of the iconic Rajabai Clock Tower and garden in Bombay (Mumbai). The city’s silent sentinel once viewed from miles away, with its four side clocks, literally keeping watch over the city. And was the most viewed tower at one time. Gradually losing its view as a result of the ever-sprouting tall buildings of Bombay.

One of the finest buildings in the city, with a beautiful garden. The Library with the Rajabai Clock Tower and the Convocation Hall were both designed by British architect, Sir Gilbert Scott. The grand Convocation Hall, built with a handsome donation from Sir Cowasji Jehangir. The Library and the 280-foot Rajabai Clock Tower were funded by Premchand Roychand. A well-known banker and philanthropist. It was completed in 1878, the tower was named after Roychand’s mother Rajabai.

Did you know – the beautiful garden complex was designed by Muncherjee Mezban, it had some beautiful trees and statues.
