Interior Of Tanjore Palace, 1890 Postcard

tanjore palace

This is an old 1890 postcard of the interior of the Tanjore Palace. Tanjore or Thanjavur has a rich historical past, once ruled by the great Cholas, Marathas, and Nayaks for centuries. They left behind legacies of magnificent palaces and temples. This photo is the interior of the palace that was built by the Nayak dynasty in the 16th century.

Tanjore’s other claim to fame is its imposing edifice, the world-famous and UNESCO listed the great Brihadeeswara Temple. The Tanjore Painting is also another of the great cultures of Thanjavur, which goes back centuries. The various rulers down the ages encouraged art and culture. King Serfoji II’s white statue is partially visible. He was the last of the rulers of the Bhonsle dynasty.  Click on the photo for better view.
