This is an old 1890 photograph of the interior of the Tanjore, now Thanjavur palace. That has a rich historical past. This albumen photo of 1890 shows the interior of the Thanjavur Palace, which was built by the Nayak dynasty in the 16th century.
Thanjavur’s other claim to fame is its imposing temple edifice, the world-famous and UNESCO-listed Brihadeeswara Temple. Various rulers and chieftains encouraged art and culture. The Tanjore Painting is the historically famous traditional art culture of this land, first introduced by the Chola dynasty in the 16th century.
So much so, the Tanjore Paintings are still very popular to this day. Here the photograph shows the Tanjore palace’s opulent interior like they say fit for a king. The white statue displayed is that of king Serfoji II, also known as Sarabhoji II Bhonsle. He was the last of the rulers in the Bhonsle dynasty.
