VT Railway Station Printed In Ravi Varma Press Bombay, 1899 PC

An old 1899 postcard of the VT Railway Station in Bombay, printed by the Raja Ravi Varma Press in Karli (or Karla). This is a lithograph postcard printed at the famous Raja Ravi Varma Press at Karli or Karla near Bombay (Mumbai). The original artwork of this Victoria Terminus was signed by a PG or Paul Gerhardt.

He was a German who worked at the Press. Under the master printer and business manager Schleicher (also a German). Fritz Schleicher bought out the press from Raja Ravi Varma in 1901. With great dexterity and marketing skills he turned it around into a profitable venture. Consequently, oleographs and lithographs started appearing in the market in large numbers for the first time. Did you know – Raja Ravi Varma personally involved himself with the first oleograph “Birth of Shakuntala” in the press in 1894.
