1791 Anglo-Mysore War, Bangalore & Seringapatam, 1911 Map
This rare map, printed in 1911, depicts two crucial campaigns of the Third Anglo-Mysore War (1790–1792). The upper map shows Bangalore in March 1791, highlighting Bangalore Fort and the fortified Pettah (town), which were stormed by the forces of Lord Cornwallis. The Pettah fell on 5 March 1791, and after a determined siege, Bangalore Fort was captured later that month, giving the British a crucial strategic foothold in southern India and paving the way for their advance toward Seringapatam.
The lower map traces the 1792 assault on Seringapatam, the fortified island capital of Tipu Sultan’s Kingdom of Mysore on the Cauvery River. Following Tipu Sultan’s attack on Travancore, an ally of the British, a powerful coalition of the British East India Company, the Marathas, and the Nizam of Hyderabad launched a coordinated campaign that culminated in the Treaty of Seringapatam (1792). The treaty forced Tipu Sultan to cede nearly half of his kingdom, dramatically reshaping the political landscape of Southern India. Click image to enlarge.
