Great Indian Peninsula Railway (GIPR) Train With World Cruise Tourists In India, 1929 Photo
An interesting 1929 photo of the Great Indian Peninsula Railway (GIPR) Train with world cruise tourists in India. The annotation reads “Our Train Across India Resolute World Cruise 1929.” The SS Resolute was a tourist ship belonging to the Hamburg-American Line (USA), that normally went on world cruises. British India was one of their important stopovers. Naturally, the Taj Mahal being one of their star attractions. See an image of a 1929 brochure of the SS Resolute Cruise Ship showing its itinerary in India.
The SS Resolute sailed across the world every year, with Bombay being one of the important stops. Once they arrive in Bombay (now Mumbai), the tourists would board a special steam train to Agra, Delhi, Benaras, and Calcutta. Pre-arranged motor cars would ferry the tourists for sightseeing to the Taj Mahal, Fatehpur Sikri, Qutab Minar, Ganges, etc. This rare photo shows the special tourist steam train halting at a railway station. Not sure which station, but probably Agra or Delhi. Click on the photo for better view.

Did you know- nationalized in 1951, Indian Railways is today the largest rail network in Asia and the world’s second-largest network operated under a single management.
