An American Tourist Climbs The Dome of The Taj Mahal In Agra, 1927 Photo
This rare 1927 news photo captures an astonishing moment – an American man perched on top of the grand dome of the Taj Mahal in Agra. The climber was James M. Andrews from the USA, a student of the world’s first “Floating University,” the SS Ryndam. How he managed to scale the smooth marble dome of the Taj Mahal remains a mystery. Most likely, he did it for the thrill of adventure.
In the inset, Andrews is seen holding on to the huge bronze finial that crowns the dome. It appeared tiny against the vast marble structure. Below, his fellow students and Indian attendants watch from the ground, amazed at his daring feat.
The “Floating University” was an educational world cruise aboard the Holland America Line SS Ryndam, which set sail from New York in 1926. The ship carried students and professors on a seven-month journey across 35 countries, including, at the time, British India. When the Ryndam docked at Bombay or Calcutta, its passengers likely traveled by train to visit the world-famous Taj Mahal in Agra, where this extraordinary photo was taken. Click image to enlarge.

Did you know- it is said that Shah Jahan killed the architect and workers after the monument was completed. This is purportedly believed to be a myth.
