View From The Madras Pier – Old Print 1880

This is an 1880 engraving measuring 10.5 x 7 inches. Titled “Madras-View Taken From The Pier Before The construction Of The Harbour”. The picture shows the beach in Madras, now Chennai, known as the Marina beach. The building in the foreground is the Secretariat of Fort St George. The title refers to the Madras iron pier built in 1861 for the docking of ships.

Before it was constructed ships were anchored at outer sea and passengers ferried by boats to the shore. Some of the boats can be seen in the image. Before the construction of the Harbour,  they anchored ships at outer sea and ferried the men and cargo in boats. Once the iron pier came up, the use of the ferry boats were much reduced. See my post-  Antique Print Madras The Iron Pier 1863.
