English Emporium At South Parade British Era Bangalore, 1910 Postcard

A 1910 postcard of an English Emporium at South Parade during British Era Bangalore. The quaint building on the left is the English Emporium, its imposing facade a legacy of fine European architecture in British India. The beautiful commercial building faces the famous South Parade Road (now MG Road).

South Parade was one of the main arterial streets of Bangalore (and still is). Once a pleasant boulevard, known for its wideness, flowering shrubs, shady trees, and bustling with horse carriages and bicycles. Both sides of the street were lined with quaint shops, restaurants, bookshops, theaters, and so on.

A perfect hangout for generally the European crowd, which the city had a great many before independence. However, MG Road today is far from its old self, with rapidly growing and choking traffic. The photo gives a glimpse of old Bangalore and its enduring charm. The city was originally a military cantonment after the Anglo-Mysore War in 1799. Click on the image to enlarge.

Did you know – that Tipu Sultan had a palace inside the Bangalore Fort as a summer retreat.
