Street Scene Near Russell Market In Bangalore, 1900 Postcard

A street scene near Russell Market in Bangalore (Bengaluru) is shown in this old 1900 postcard. The street scene area is apparently in Bangalore’s Cantonment. Where the Russell Market is located, and the road is likely Broadway Road. The Cantonment is a British-created area for the military and civilian offices. It was a self-contained city in a city. Which included residences, commercial areas, theaters, places of worship, and so on.

The cantonment is now known as Shivajinagar. The city’s prominent landmark St Mary’s Cathedral is close to the Russel Market. The street scene on Broadway Road looks almost bare and devoid of automobiles. Exuding an unhurried life of a bygone era. It looks bare and sparsely populated unlike what it is today. Did you know – the Russell Market is close to the Bowring Institute, Commercial Street, Cubbon, etc. It also catered to the many Europeans in the city at one time.
