Broadway Road In Cantonment Bangalore, 1915 Postcard
A 1915 postcard of Broadway Road in the Cantonment area of Bangalore (Bengaluru). Broadway Road as it is now called is part of the Russell Market area of Cantonment (Shivaji Nagar) in Bangalore. Because of the Cantonment Market’s rapid growth. T B Russell, the then Municipal Commissioner of Bangalore, initiated the construction of a building with a clock tower for the market way back in 1915.
After its inauguration in 1927, the new building was named “Russell Market” in honor of the now-retired Municipal Commissioner (who by then settled in England). However, much before it was called the Cantonment Market or Russell Market, it was colloquially known as the “New Market.” Interestingly before the market came up it was a marshy land and a habitation for birds and animals in the late 19th century. Did you know- that a cantonment is a military station created by the British containing all amenities like shops, hospitals, theaters, worship areas, and so on. It was like a city in a city.
