Broadway Road Bangalore – Old Postcard 1915

An old 1915 photo postcard of Broadway Road in Bangalore, now Bengaluru. Broadway Road as it is now called is in Russell Market area of the cantonment (Shivaji Nagar) in Bangalore. Because of the Cantonment Market’s rapid growth. T B Russell the then Municipal Commissioner of Bengaluru had initiated the construction of a building with a clock tower for the market in 1927.

After its inauguration in 1933, they named the new building “Russell Market” in honor of the retired Municipal Commissioner (who settled in England by then). Much before it was called the Cantonment Market or Russell Market, it was colloquially known as the “New Market.” Interestingly before the market came up it was a marshy land and a habitation for birds and animals in the late 19th century. Did you know- a cantonment is a military station created by the British containing all amenities like shops, hospitals, theaters, worship areas, and so on. It was like a city in a city.
