Russell Market Bangalore – Old Postcard

Vintage Postcard Russell Market Bangalore. The old picture-postcard shows the “Market” also called the “Russell Market” in Bangalore, now Bengaluru. Named after T B Russell Municipal Commissioner of Bangalore or Bengaluru, the Russell Market opened in 1927. The architectural design of the Market building was of Indian style, than the usual European or the Indo-Saracenic style of the British India Raj period.

Russell Market was mainly to cater to the needs of the British military and civil services personnel and their families. Today Russell Marker is hugely busy with shoppers and sellers alike. Read the Oral History At Russell Market.

Did you know- A Britisher WH Murphy, an executive engineer of the Cantonment Municipal Council designed Russell Market in the British Raj era.  And after whom Murphy Town is named.
