Raja Ravi Varma, only a few may be unaware of this greatest artist of India. EMJ Venniyoor the author is an old hand on the works of Raja Ravi Varma. He first brought out the book on the artist probably in 1981. He was the Director, Museums And Zoos And Art Gallery in Trivandrum (now Thiruvananthapuram). The art gallery referred to is the Sree Chitra Art Gallery. It houses a unique collection of art by Raja Ravi Varma.

Some of the other famous artist’s works include Nicholas Roerich, Svetoslav Roerich, Jamini Roy, Rabindranath Tagore, etc. Raja Ravi Varma in his lifetime had a great desire to open an art gallery for his paintings. He had at times suggested this to the sovereigns of Travancore but for some reason, it was overlooked. However, it was opened in 1935 by then current Maharaja Chitra Thirunal.
