Bangalore Cantonment Market – Old Postcard 1900
This is an old 1900 photo postcard of the cantonment market in Bangalore, now Bengaluru. Shows a British era scene which is probably the cantonment market area. Also visible is a British officer in a sun helmet, perhaps a police officer on his regular beat.
See my posts on- Cantonment Market In Bangalore – Old Postcard 1914., and Bangalore Cantonment Area – Old Photo 1880.
Also visible on the top right corner of the Postcard is a gas street light that is hanging high. Bengaluru city street lights operated on gas till 1905, after that these were then electrified.
The city was one of the favoured places by the British civil and military officers because of its cool climate. With ample housing, recreation centres, markets, and so on, and that they could bring their families.
Did you know- Bengaluru was the first city in Asia to use electric street lights in 1905.
