Bangalore Cantonment Market – Old Postcard 1900
An old 1900 photo postcard of the Cantonment Market in Bangalore, now Bengaluru. This scene is apparently from Broadway Road in the Cantonment Market area (now Shivaji Magar) of British-era Bangalore in 1900. Cantonment Market was also known by its official name “Russell Market”. Interestingly a British officer in a sun helmet is seen walking toward the market.
Also noticeable on the top right corner is a gas street light hanging high. The city street lights in a bygone era operated on gas till 1905, thereon these were then electrified. Bangalore was once the most favoured city for British civil and military officers because of its salubrious air. Besides, there was ample housing, recreation centers, markets, and so on. And most of all they were allowed to bring in their families. Click on the photo for better view.
