Rare View of Fiat Trucks For The British India Military, 1916 Postcard
This 1916 postcard shows a rare view of Fiat trucks lined up for delivery to the British Indian military. To see another postcard on Fiat Trucks in India, go to FIAT truck postcard. These give a rare glimpse of the vehicles once used by the colonial rulers in India during World War I.
The title is in Italian; translated, it reads “the Italian effort for ammunition.” (not entirely sure of what that means). The caption at the bottom reads “Fiat cars of 15 tons furnished to the Indian Government.” These trucks may have been intended for use in military, civilian, or even as a military ambulance service.
But by the look of the uniformed military men standing by, it seems to have been for military purposes. But whatever the purpose was, Fiat proved its worth. Especially when a convoy of Fiat Trucks crossed the Sahara desert in 1912, remarkably without any breakdown. Click on the photo to enlarge.
Did you know – that military armoured vehicles were once made in British India in WWI, synonymously called Tatanagars.
