WWII Indian Made Armoured Vehicle, 1942 Photo
Old 1942 photo of a military armoured vehicle that was made in India in WWII. The shipment is loaded onto freight cars and en route to defence posts. The armoured vehicles are from an important railway workshop. Since this was a censored news photo the exact location was not known, neither was it known where it was destined for.
According to this 1942 news clip “India is producing an ever-increasing supply of Arms for the defence of India.” These armoured vehicles were named Armoured Carrier Wheeled Indian Pattern (ACV-IP). Because of war shortages, England could not meet the entire needs of the commonwealth countries. They encouraged producing indigenously.
One of them was this armoured fighting carrier. They were produced by Tata Locomotive and the Railways. The Tata ones were synonymously called Tatanagars. The Tatanagar carriers were used wherever British Indian troops were deployed abroad. Becoming very popular in combat in no time. Today it is remembered as a symbol of “Make In India” in WWII.

Did you know- this special armoured carrier project took off in 1941 the funds were from the Viceroy’s war purpose fund. Many Maharajahs were asked to fund the project.
