Bombay University Hall & Rajabai Clock Tower – Old Postcard

This is an old 1890 postcard of Bombay University Hall, Rajabai Clock Tower, and library. When viewed from the nearby Watson’s Hotel. The University of  Bombay or Mumbai was established by the British in 1857. Later a gothic-style building was constructed for the University. Sir Gilbert Scott, a British architect designed all three buildings.

The grand Convocation Hall, completed in 1874 with generous donations from Sir Cowasji Jehangir Readymoney. An industrialist and philanthropist of Bombay. The 280 feet Rajabai Clock Tower along with the library was completed in 1878. Funded by another philanthropist and well-known banker Premchand Roychand.

Naming it Rajabai Clock Tower in memory of his mother. Read more about Timeless Heritage. See my post- Vintage Postcard University Gardens Bombay.

Did you know- The Rajabai Clock Tower had once sixteen tunes. And during the British Raj days, it played- Rule Britannia, God Save the King, Home Sweet Home, and A Handel Symphony. The tunes changed four times a day.
