Queen Victoria's Delhi Durbar, 1877 Print

Old 1877 print of the Delhi Durbar of 1877 to honor Queen Victoria. This page is from The Graphic newspaper of Feb 3, 1877. The engraving depicts the pavilion and amphitheater of the 1877 Delhi Durbar. See also a rare photo of the same Delhi Durbar from another post. The ceremony was held in honor of Queen Victoria, after she was awarded the new title “Empress of India” by the British Parliament in 1876.

Since she was not in a position to visit India, Lord Lytton, the then Viceroy, read out the proclamation in Urdu and English. A large crowd descended for the Durbar also known as the ‘Proclamation Durbar’. This included the Indian Royalty, British civil and military officials, and general citizens. See also an earlier post on the Viceroy’s Camp. And another post of The Graphic with an illustration of the Viceroy’s Camp.

Did you know – two more durbars would follow, one was in 1903 and the other in 1911. These were the Coronation Durbars, about the succession to the British throne by King Edward VII and King George V in 1903 and 1911 respectively.
