Municipal Corporation Building & Trams Bombay, 1890 Photo
Old 1890 photo that shows the spectacular Municipal Corporation Building and horse trams in Bombay (Mumbai). Today it is a Grade IIA heritage building and is adjacent to the strikingly beautiful Victoria Terminus (Chhatrapati Shivaji Terminus). Interestingly, both the heritage buildings were designed by the masterly British architect F W Stevens.
The Municipal Corporation building is located at the crossroads of Mahapalika Marg and Dr Dadabhai Naoroji Roads. Soon after the completion of the Victoria Terminus in 1888, F W Stevens ventured on his next big project. That of the Municipal Corporation Building, the construction of which was completed in 1893. The city’s horse-drawn trams can be seen in the landscape. Once a charming sight on the roads of Bombay, but discontinued in the early 1960s. The horse-drawn tramway gave way to electrified trams in 1907.
To see the superb interiors of this beautiful edifice go to Mumbai Municipal Corporation (BMC or MCGM) Headquarters Building, Mumbai.
Did you know – the building houses the Mumbai Municipal Corporation which is the richest corporation in India.
