Bombay Electric Tram At Flora Fountain, 1925 Photo
An old 1925 photo of an Electric Tram At Flora Fountain in Bombay (now Mumbai). Not many may know that once the city’s transport had an efficient tramway system. Trundling in their various designated routes with passengers hopping on and off while the tram was still running. Shown is a near close-up view of an approaching electric tram on the busy Flora Fountain Street lined crisscross with tram tracks.
People and horse carriages seem to be briskly moving on. The surrounding tall charming buildings appear to be silently watching the bustle below. The tram first rolled out in the streets of Mumbai in 1874 pulled by horses. By 1907 the tramway system was electrified and covered a larger area in the city than before. Unfortunately due to traffic congestion, the Bombay tramway was shut down after a final run in 1964.
Did you know- tram tracks hidden underneath the road for more than six decades have been uncovered in Mumbai’s Flora Fountain area.
