The Magnificent Taj Mahal Hotel & Apollo Bunder Bombay, 1930 Postcard

A 1930 postcard of the magnificent Taj Mahal Hotel and the entrance to Apollo Bunder in Bombay (Mumbai). Lord Hardinge’s statue overlooks the Taj Mahal Hotel and the Apollo Bunder. Lord Hardinge was the British Viceroy of India from 1910 to 1916. Apollo Bunder served as the landing jetty for passengers arriving by steamers from overseas till the 1930s.

Also seen are motor cars and the charming victoria carriages in this beautiful image. The Gateway of India another of Bombay’s iconic landmark, not pictured here, is located opposite to the Taj Mahal Hotel. The Royal Bombay Yatch Club (again not pictured) is in the neighbourhood of this grand hotel. Noticeable are the sparse crowd unlike the maddeningly hectic crowd that you see today.

Did you know – the Taj Hotel is a “U” shaped building facing landside, the main entrance is from the landside and not from the seaside.
