The Imposing Taj Mahal Hotel Bombay, 1905 Photo

taj mahal hotel

A 1905 photo of the imposing Taj Mahal Hotel in Bombay (Mumbai). This majestic structure faces the Gateway of India at Apollo Bunder. Although the Gateway of India did not come up until 1924. What is interesting in this photo is the smoke emanating from the tall chimney on the roof.

Completed in 1903, the Taj Mahal Palace Hotel was conceived by the Parsi industrialist, Jamshetji Tata, in the days when most clubs and hotels were open only to Europeans. To counter this prejudice, it is said that Jamshetji built this grand hotel at Apollo Bunder. Where Indians and Europeans could freely socialize on neutral ground. The Taj Mahal Hotel’s adjoining high-rise annex was completed in 1973 on the site formerly occupied by Green’s Hotel.
