Taj Mahal Palace Hotel Bombay – Rare 1905 Advertisement

taj hotel wl

A rare 1905 advertisement of the Taj Mahal Palace Hotel in Bombay, now Mumbai. Jamshetji Tata the great Parsi businessman was said to have been denied entry into the upscale Watson’s Hotel at Fort in Mumbai. Since it claimed to be a whites-only establishment, no Indians were allowed entry. Because of the slight, Jamshetji took up the task of building the Taj Mahal Palace Hotel in 1903. Here

It faces the Gateway of India, Apollo Bunder. This Taj’s early advertisement seems interesting “EUROPEAN MANAGEMENT. EUROPEAN STAFF.” This was not uncommon at that time in Bombay, hotels preferred European management. To avoid their business going down the Taj would have followed suit by having European Management and staff. The ‘Taj Tower’ was added next door to the old palace wing in 1973. By acquiring the adjacent European-run ‘Greens’ Hotel complex. Click on the image for better view

Did you know- there were once “Dumb Friends” nights at the hotel which were animal shows which were a huge hit with the patrons.
