Scale Model of The Taj Mahal Hotel & Tower Bombay, 1971 Photo

scale model taj hotel

This 1971 news photo shows the Bombay-based Taj Mahal Hotel and the proposed Taj Tower in an architectural scale model. It shows an architectural scale model of the old Taj Mahal Palace Hotel and the Taj Tower before its construction. Next door to the old Taj is the 24-floor Taj Tower annex block. All in all, both are located opposite the Gateway of India.

The luxury tower was built on the site of the once European-owned Greens Hotel which the Taj had acquired in the 1970s. It opened its doors in 1973.  The design is consistent with that of the architectural scale model shown in this photo. It was designed by the American architect Melton Bekker. Utilizing a blend of classical Indian and contemporary European styles. This hotel at Colaba continues to dazzle patrons with awe-inspiring luxury and magnificent views of the city’s famed waterfront.
