Market in Cantonment British Era Bangalore, 1900 Postcard
A 1900 postcard of Market in Cantonment during British Era Bangalore (Bengaluru). This scene is apparently from Broadway Road in the Cantonment Market area (now Shivaji Nagar) of Bangalore. Interestingly a British officer in a sun helmet walks towards the market. Cantonment Market was also known by its official name “Russell Market”.
Also noticeable on the top right corner is a high gas street light. The city street lights in a bygone era operated on gas till 1905, thereon these were then electrified. Bangalore was once the most favoured city for British civil and military officers because of its salubrious air. Besides, there was ample housing, recreation centers, markets, etc. And most of all they were allowed to bring in their families. Click on the photo for better view.
