Two aerial view postcards of Prince of Wales Museum & GPO in British Era Bombay. A R Haseler the famous aerial photographer during the British era took the original photographs. The Prince of Wales Museum, now Chhatrapati Shivaji Maharaj Vastu Sangrahalaya, stands majestically. It faces the Wellington Circle in front, now SP Mukherjee Chowk, and on the left is the Elphinstone College.
Sassoon Library is on the right of the Elphinstone College. Royal Alfred Sailor’s Home, now the Maharashtra Police Headquarters, is partially visible with its tiled roof on the right. The equestrian statue of King Edward VII on a horse, known as Kala Ghoda, is situated on the left of the Museum on Esplanade Road (now Mahatma Gandhi Road). Electric Trams are visible right in front of the Museum gardens.
Just as the Prince of Wales Museum has the domed roof the General Post Office (GPO) also has the domed roof shown in the 2nd postcard. The GPO is situated in the vicinity of Victoria Terminus, now Chhatrapati Shivaji Terminus. The building was constructed in the Indo-Saracenic architectural style. British architect John Begg had designed the GPO. Begg was probably the first to introduce the Indo-Saracenic style to Bombay.
Did you know – after its completion, the Prince of Wales Museum was initially used as a hospital for troops during WWI.
