1837 Watercolour Painting of Indian & European Soldiers
An 1837 watercolour painting of Indian and European soldiers, a goat, and a camel during the British India era. This is a 10 x 8 inch watercolour painting. It depicts two native Indian soldiers, a European soldier, a camel, and a goat. On the reverse side of this artwork is a pen-and-ink sketch of a composition of William Shakespeare’s Seven Ages.
Both artworks, although unsigned, are believed to have been done by the talented Major A C Hutchinson. Not much is known of Hutchinson except that he was with the British India military working for the Bengal Artillery under the East India Company. Two native Indian soldiers with traditional weapons appear to be in an intense conversation. The European soldier is probably from the East India Company. Animals were sometimes featured in paintings done in India, reflecting the country’s rich cultural and natural heritage. Click image to enlarge.
