1837 Watercolour Painting of Indian & European Soldiers
An 1837 watercolour painting of Indian, European soldiers, goat, and camel from the British India era. This is a 10 x 8 inch watercolour painting. The painting depicts two native Indian soldiers a European soldier and two domestic animals. On the reverse side of this artwork is a pen and ink sketch of a composition of William Shakespeare’s Seven Ages.
Both artworks although unsigned are believed to have been done by the talented Major A C Hutchinson. Not much is known of Hutchinson except that he was with the British India military working for the Bengal Artillery under the East India Company. Two native Indian soldiers with traditional weapons appear to be in an intense conversation. The European soldier is probably from the East India Company, two domestic animals a camel and goat are also depicted. Click on the image to enlarge.
