Magnificent View of Victoria Terminus & BMC Bombay, 1880 Photo

An 1880 photo of the beautiful Victoria Terminus and the Bombay Municipal Corporation (BMC) building’s junction. For the uninitiated, the Victoria Terminus is on the right and the BMC is on the left. The Victoria Terminus (VT) is now known as the Chhatrapati Shivaji Maharaj Terminus (CSMT). The Bombay Municipal Corporation (BMC) is now the Brihan Mumbai Municipal Corporation.

The junction is of two forked roads one is the  Dr Dadabhai Naoroji Road (seen in the picture). The other road is the Mahapalika Marg which leads to the left of BMC (not seen). The junction here appears to be crowded with people and horse-drawn trams. The trams seem to be packed with passengers. It must be remembered, that the automobile, would take another 20-25 years to make an advent in Bombay. This Magnificent View of the Victoria Terminus and BMC junction is unlike what it is today.

Did you know – both the imposing BMC and Victoria Terminus were designed by the renowned British architect F W Stevens.
