Victoria Terminus British Era Bombay, 1897 Print

This page is from the Scientific American newspaper of 29th May 1897. Victoria Terminus Railway Station (VT), now Chhatrapati Shivaji Maharaj Terminus (CST) is one of the best landmarks of Bombay or Mumbai. Designed by F. W. Stevens, the building was completed in ten years from 1878 to 1888.

The city of Bombay has the grandest railway station in the world, and it is the finest modern architectural work in India. It is known as the Victoria Terminus and executive offices of the Great Indian Peninsula Railway.

The architect was F. W. Stevens, M.I.C.E. The principal feature of the edifice is the large central octagonal dome of cut stone masonry, which gives a very fine effect and may be seen from any part of the city.

The figure crowning the apex of the dome is a stone statue of Progress….while in front of the central facade is a lifesize statue of the Queen-Empress Victoria. Also visible is the horse-drawn tram in the foreground. The Bombay Tramway system was started in 1874 it was electrified in 1907.
