Maharashtra Police Headquarters British Era Bombay – 4 Postcards
Four old postcards from 1900 to 1930 show the Maharastra Police Headquarters building in British Era Bombay (Mumbai). Situated on Wellington Circle, now the SP Mukherjee Chowk. It houses the Mumbai Police Headquarters today. It was originally built as the “Alfred Sailors Home“, a sort of barracks for sailors. The renowned architect F W Stevens designed the building which was completed in 1876.
Out of Stevens’s masterpiece designs the Victoria Terminus (VT), now known as the Chhatrapati Shivaji Terminus (CST), is the most outstanding. The Government of India, in 1928, acquired the building from the Naval Committee. It served the purpose of the Bombay Legislative Assembly and Council Hall.
It continued as the Council Hall until 1982, subsequently the Maharashtra Police Headquarters took over the building, which they occupy to this day. The structure is often confused with the Mumbai Police Headquarters building. Noteworthy are the Horse-drawn trams seen in two of the postcards.
Did you know- it is now a Grade I listed UNESCO World Heritage Site in South Mumbai.
