A rare 1792 map of the lands that were possessed by Tippoo Saheb (Tipu Sultan) in 1792. This map was made following Tipu’s annexation of lands in Malabar, Maratha, Nizam, and Canara regions. However, his territories were divided after he was killed in the 4th Anglo-Mysore War in 1799.

It was divided by his enemies: the British, Marathas, the Carnatic rulers, the Nizam, etc. Tipu had assumed command of Mysore State from his father, Hyder Ali, at the early age of 29. He governed Mysore for nearly 20 years, spewing hatred at the East India Company, which he believed wished to capture his territories.

He had vowed to destroy the British completely. The four Anglo-Mysore Wars of I, II, III & IV were fought between the Mysoreans and the British. Tipu was defeated by the British Indian forces in each of the battles. It was the capture of Tipu’s impregnable Fort in Bangalore and then Seringapatam, that had deep psychological repercussions on him. Tipu Sultan was killed in the 4th Anglo-Mysore War.

Did you know – that Tipu identified with tigers, and adopted the tiger’s stripes as his motif.
